Where did the idea for the story come from? The story was inspired by a small but nasty encounter I had with a person I met online. I was shocked by the way this person treated me, and then immediately surprised by my own shock. How had I decided that this was someone I could trust? The incident got me thinking about the strange and flimsy evidence we use to judge the contextless people we meet outside our existing social networks, whether online or off. We decide that it means something that a person likes cats instead of dogs, or has a certain kind of artsy tattoo, or can land a good joke in a text, but, really, these are reassuring self-deceptions. Our initial impression of a person is pretty much entirely a mirage of guesswork and projection. When I started writing the story, I had the idea of a person who had adopted all these familiar signifiers as a kind of camouflage, but was something else—or nothing at all—underneath. She repeatedly changes her mind about him. Do you think that she ever actually interprets his thoughts or behavior correctly?

CNN – We have cat-astrophic news for animal lovers: Men who like cats are less likely to get a date. That’s the takeaway from a study by Colorado State University, which found that women are less likely to swipe right — or say yes — to men if they’re posing with a cat in a picture. Scientists showed hundreds of women photos of two men, both men pictured with and without a furry companion. Their responses showed that the men’s luck got noticeably worse when women saw the picture with a cat.
By comparison, positive ratings for the second subject did not decline significantly when he was pictured with a cat — but women were more likely to rule him out as a potential partner. The findings are likely the result of long-held cultural stereotypes about cat and dog owners, the authors said. A different study last year found that the “crazy cat lady” stereotype is not supported by evidence.

Men with cats are a dating turn-off
If you’ve ever been on the Internet, you’ve probably seen Debbie, the crazy eHarmony cat lady. Her video for the online dating site went viral and now has almost 28 million views. Only issue? Cara Hartmann recorded the video back in as a joke to put on her younger sister’s Facebook wall. Since then, most people have realized that Debbie was in fact just a character, but she remains one of the most beloved memes on the Internet.
In the video above, The Pet Collective aided by some HuffPost Comedy editors’ expert cat knowledge investigates how Hartmann tricked everyone into falling in love with the lady who just really loved cats.
The findings provide evidence that pets play a role in women’s dating that most heterosexual women view a man pictured with a cat as less.
Numerous strategies and tips exist for putting your best foot forward in an online dating profile. You should be seen with friends, enjoying the outdoors, and maybe in a snapshot with your beloved pooch. In two surveys, more than heterosexual women aged 18 to 24 were shown photos of two men, aged 20 and 21, who posed for photos with and without a cat in their arms.
Cradling a cat had a negative impact across the board. In the first survey, when one of the men was feline-free, 38 percent of respondents said they were likely or very likely to be receptive to a casual dating dynamic. A serious relationship was on the table for 37 percent. But with the cat in the picture, those warm feelings dropped to just 33 percent. Women who responded they would never be interested rose from 9 percent after viewing non-cat images to 14 percent when a furry friend appeared.
The man in the other survey fared no better, with 40 percent of respondents uninterested in a date when he was alone compared to 45 percent when he was holding his pet. A serious relationship was a no-go for 41 percent of women, with the number rising to 45 percent when presented with the man and his cat. Ultimately, the women found the photos of men with cats to signal the men were more neurotic, less masculine, and less desirable from a dating standpoint.
But nearly half of respondents self-identified as dog lovers, which might indicate some pet biases are at work. A photo of a man posing with cat, of course, does not exclude a love of dogs, nor does the absence of a pet indicate a preference for either cats or dogs.

If only Ernst Blofeld had stopped stroking that cat, he might have been able to set aside plans for world domination and find a nice girlfriend instead. She had thought that women would actively prefer the pictures of men holding a pet.
When a photo of one of the subjects without a cat was shown to the respondents, 38% of women said they were likely or very likely to casually date him.

If you truly are allergic, you might want to go to your doctor and get a prescription ASAP. She knows that you don’t need to hear it all the time, and the cat isn’t paying attention anyway.
